Good book

She told us a lot of things that day, but the main think I remember that she said is, "Don't forget where you came from." When I used to work at the Swap-O-Rama [flea market], some of my friends would say, "Oh Nancy, you're too good to work there." But that's not it. I don't want people to confuse it. It's not that I'm too good. I'm not any better than anybody else who works there. It's just that--maybe I see farther than them. They see tomorrow only. That's all they can see. Because there's nobody to show them how to get somewhere. There's not a lot of people there who have gotten somewhere themselves. And if they do, they don't come back. In a poor neighborhood, it's like people become successful, and then you never see them again.
